The Algarve coast in southern Portugal

Tropical beaches of endless white sand have their charms, but there’s something to be said for a seacoast a little more on the dramatic side. Here in southern Portugal, the Algarve is a region of impressively craggy shorelines, hidden coves blessed with golden beaches, high cliffs jutting sharply up from a nearly translucent Atlantic, and at least along the western coast, more helpings of unvarnished nature and less evidence of the tourist trade.
